4/14/09 - the third in our series of green building seminars for the eastern Idaho region is on the calendar! Green Building III: Green Homes will take place on Tuesday, April 28, from 9:00am until 4:30pm, at the Ammon City Building Council Chambers, 2135 S. Ammon Rd. The seminar is open to all interested persons. Registration is required, the cost is $15 and includes lunch (sponsored by Idaho Falls Power).
The agenda includes presentations by Idaho energy efficiency guru Ken Baker and Integrated Design Lab's Kevin Van den Wymelenberg. The program will also include overviews of LEED for Homes and Energy Star for Homes along with presentations on healthy & sustainable indoor finish materials, renewable energy for homes, green neighborhood development, utility company efficiency and incentive programs, and more.

11/01/08 - our second seminar in the green building series, Green Building: Materials and Methods, will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2008, 9:30-4:30. It will be held at the Idaho Falls Council Chambers, City Annex, 680 Park St. Registration is required, the cost is $10 and includes lunch. An experienced slate of presenters will cover site, mechanical/electrical, civil, shell and interior finish components of high-performance green buildings. 3/26/08 - National Renewable Energy Lab has announced a thin-film solar cell efficiency record of 19.9%, an efficiency rate comparable to silcon-based solar cells. Because thin-film cells require less energy to make this could pave the way to more affordable solar energy technology. See NREL for more details.
3/12/08 - USDA has announced that it will be accepting applications for $220 million in loans and grants as part of the Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvements Program. These funds will be available to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to purchase and install renewable energy systems or to make energy efficiency improvements. The first application deadline is April 15, 2008. Check here for more details.
2/08 - DOE has launched the Builders Challenge with the goal of encouraging the industry to build 220,000 high performance homes by 2012.
1/08 Energy Act summary - the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 was signed into law in December. It requires improved efficiency on a variety of products, will determine new standards for others, and sets a goal for federal buildings to reduce their energy usage by 30% by 2015.
